What does a car jammer detector look for?

A useful detector does more than show that RF energy exists. In an investigation we are interested in the frequency, power, occupied bandwidth, duration and timing of the signal. That helps distinguish relevant interference from normal transmissions around the vehicle.

For fleet operators, hire companies and plant owners, the most valuable question is often not simply “was there a jammer?” but “why did the tracking system stop reporting at this point?” We can compare RF conditions with operational evidence and, where practical, reproduce or monitor the failure.

Useful evidence includes: tracker timestamps, locations where dropouts occur, vehicle type, tracker model, network used and whether multiple assets fail in the same area.

A fixed or portable detector can warn when unusual RF energy appears, which is useful for ongoing monitoring. A professional investigation goes further by characterising the signal, assessing alternative causes and attempting to identify its source. The two approaches can complement each other.

Common non-jamming causes

Not every tracker dropout is malicious. Poor antenna placement, screened vehicle bodies, damaged coax, faulty trackers, weak mobile coverage, power interruptions and local RF congestion can all cause similar failures. The investigation remains evidence-led so these causes are not overlooked.

Can a car jamming detector detect a GPS jammer?

A suitable RF detector can indicate activity in the relevant GPS/GNSS band, but professional spectrum analysis gives much more information about the signal and whether it corresponds with the reported failure.

Can you investigate a tracker that keeps going offline?

Yes. Tracker dropouts can be investigated from both the RF side and the system symptoms to determine whether interference, coverage, installation or another fault is the more likely cause.

Can a jammer affect both GPS and the mobile network?

Some jamming devices may transmit in more than one frequency range. An investigation can examine the GNSS and cellular bands separately.

Can you monitor a depot or yard for jamming?

Where the problem is intermittent, longer-term RF monitoring may be appropriate to capture events that do not occur during a short site visit.
